Safe Traveling



When you are making preparations for your travel destination and the area, country or location is not familiar to you, then it is important that you learn as much as you can about the area before you actually finalize your trip. There have been incidents of tourist who have encountered robbery or rape during their travels and this can be an unpleasant experience. This is not to frighten you, but to make you aware of the possibility.

Below, we have provided some safety tips for you to consider during your travel to prevent any danger to you or your family.

1. Avoid putting your home address on your baggage tag. List the address of a business or ask the travel agent if you can use their address in case your luggage gets lost, but only if you know someone who is working there.

2. Never leave your luggage unattended. The airport PA system constantly reminds you not to do so.

3. Have as much identification with you and don’t leave your passport or other important papers in your checked luggage. Make a photocopy of your passport and driver’s license in case these get lost at any time.

4. Never travel without a flashlight. A small flashlight can come in very handy. It is possible that there may be a thunderstorm and the lights go out. You cannot depend on the hotel’s generator to provide instant help. 

5. Have all your medication handy and labeled correctly.

6. Leave all your jewelry behind. You don’t want to come off as being boastful or ostentatious to attract robbery.

7. Travel with as little forms of credit as possible. Two credit cards are enough to travel with.

8. Stay only in hotels that have room cards (looking like a credit card) to open your hotel room door. When you go inside, be sure to put on the secure lock.

9. Ask for a room that is near the stairs or elevator

10.  Never use a taxi that is unmarked.

11. Rent a car only from a rental car company that you know the name of such as Budget, Alamo, National Car rental or Avis.

12. When parking, put your front out and your back into the parking space for quicker exit.

13. Never park in a dark area. Park instead in an area where it is very well lit and where there are enough people.

14. Get a local prepaid cell phone if yours does not work in that country.

15. If you are stopped by the police, ask respectfully for a form of identification.

16. Make sure you have a recent picture of your child or children who may be traveling with you in the event they get lost.

17. Call home and give your family members the phone number of the hotel and any cell phone numbers that you may have.

18. Travel with necessary first aid kit that has the basic essentials in case you need it such as sunscreen, medicine for diarrhea, rubbing alcohol and insect repellant.
